[RC] Pedigrees and performance? - Lucie Hancock

Kat,

I have a recently developing interest in pedigrees, perhaps because my maree, who was bred to be a world class show horse, but because of a rather"plain" face, eventually fell on hard times, and came to me. She has produced one excellent athlete, her son HH Trinity, who was the winner of the 50 mile middleweight division at the National Championship ride in 2002. After she reached her 2000 endurance miles, carrying one of my granddaughters, I started looking for a good stallion to breed her to. I have developed an interest in Egyptian Arabians, since that is my mare's heritage. She has proven to be a very good endurance horse, a very good family horse, and has taught my grandchildren how to ride, and how to ride endurance trails.
I am interested in knowing how oother Egyptian Arabians do in our sport. My experience is my one mare, Bukkura, who has proven herself to me, by carrying me, and more importantly, my granddaughters, on endurance rides. I havea watched her with a child rider refuse to trot because she knew the child was not ready for it, yet another child could get her to trot with ease.

How do we measure the quality of a horse? by their ability to cover long distances quickly and remain sound? By the beautiful "look" in a show ring? Surely that's a part of it, but also the mind and character of the horse, that enables him to carry adult or child safely.

Just one grandmother's perspective.

There are 2 ways to win at this sport. You take a horse and race him for a
short time and then find a new horse or you can take one horse , do the
homework and spend many miles and years enjoying that horse.
