Sure.  But the point I was trying to make is that the mitochondria
(which we agree come from the dam) have their *own* DNA, separate from
the nuclear DNA.  That mitochondrial DNA is the information that has
been used to trace dam lines (not just in horses) back hundreds or
thousands of years.
