RE: [RC] RC: Flies and Ticks - heidi

DO NOT INJECT CATTLE IVOMEC INTO HORSES!!!!!

lets try that again.

DO NOT INJECT CATTLE IVOMEC INTO HORSES!!!!!

I'll second that! <g>

I have not heard that ivermectin has been shown to kill ticks. It
does
kill the larvae of a weird parasitic worm that lives in the neck, whose
only pathological effect is to cause an allergic reaction in some horses
(itchy neck). Perhaps someone else has info on dermatological parasites
that are killed by ivermectin?

My parasitology is a bit hazy, but the bottom line is that ivermectin will
kill dermatological parasites that get in deep enough to suck a major
amount of blood, but not the ones that just nibble a little bit and
irritate. So ticks and lice are affected by ivermectin, as are those
summer sore critters, etc. But I'd suspect that most flies aren't fazed
by it at all.
