I was on a Moonlight Ride in NC many years ago and half the near-by army base were on night maneuvers in the same area we were riding in.  They were not supposed to talk so we would come up on this black lump (they were in full battle gear and packs)  and the horse had no idea what they were.  I would just holler and say I know you can't talk but will you just not move until I get by...Soon the horse decided they were just weird rocks and we had no more problems.
