RE: [RC] [RC] when to wean? - Laurie Durgin

Just read that they now thing weaning gradually is better and causes less problems than abrupt weaning. Mine were just separated over elctric fence, took her out at about 9 months and left him with other two horses he was used too. After 2 months I returned her . Of course he 'snacked ' occasionally till I sold her at 18 months. :0)

I was wondering when it's best to wean a foal (I'm sure there's many right
answers for this one)? Is it preferable to wean slowly or by seperating the mare
directly? Thanks!

They're athletes! This is a partnership between horse and rider - we don't
have any jockeys out there, just pals and partners. We'd allow a rider with
a broken foot, a sore back and a nasty cold to compete - but we would never
let a horse in a similiar condition hit the trail. ~ Dr. Barney Flemming DVM
