Re: [RC] Blue Heeler/Australian Cattle Dogs - Typef

As is usually the case, I didn't get the original post on this subject so I'm writing the entire list. (Always the bridesmaid, never the bride).

I have been entrusted with a one-year-old half Australia, half Border Collie mix female named Lucy Lu, who desperately needs a family and kids to play with. Or a job, or something. She is a wonderful, wonderful dog, kind, loving and has has a rough life in her first year. She came to me from a friend who took her in for a couple of weeks and had her fixed. She had been left tied to a tree in a vacant lot and was skin and bones and had puppies and they'd all died. She'd also been abused. It took many weeks to get her to not crawl to you all the time. She is still timid and gets into things because she desperately needs something to do. Scolding her does send her into fits of whelps. The poor thing has been beaten terribly I think.

I would keep her because she is the sweatest dog and she loves to sit on the love seat with me everynight and stare dreamily into my face, happy that she has a home. But I'm on my computer all day and when I'm not, I'm on a horse so Lucy has no one to play with. I think living here is doing her an injustice, as much as I would love to keep her. Also, my old dog feels theatened by her. Ironically, she had a stroke the same day Lucy arrived and her health has not been the same since. So I am no longer able to put my old dog in the yard at the same time because she's afraid all the time. Lucy has done nothing to her to speak of, the old dog is just not comfortable with the company. It's created quite a juggle for me as I'm not used to having a dog in the house, nor is the old dog used to being in here. My carpet is suffering terribly!

If there's anyone on this list who might be interested in giving her a good home, I would entertain the idea of talking to you. I really don't want to put her in a foster home and would rather find her a permanent home with a happy family.

:) Jackie

Why don't you check out petfinder.com?  There is a lovely girl
up for adoption in MI.  Select Dog, breed "cattle", State: MI
Check out "Wendy".

Also, Jenny in OH does a great job with ACD adoptions.  She
has several nice ones right now.  Find her using City / State
Eaton, OH with Dog, Breed: Cattle

We got our male 2 years ago in March from Jenny and shipped
him out to NM from OH.  He's just great.  She got him at about
15 months and we found her and adopted him at 2 years. Thank
goodness she does what she does.

Our female we just got from the Albuquerque Animal Shelter 2
weeks ago.  She's just a year.

Both are GREAT dogs.  Jasper came house broken.  Nanaimo
was housebroken within a couple days.

I can't imagine people throwing away these good dogs.  Yes,
sometimes you can find puppies up for adoption as well.  Have
fun, they are a great breed.  Jasper can do 20+ training rides
with us now.  On our NM rocks and sand, that's a tough dog
with tough feet.  He is learning to ride with me in the saddle
now and then like a real ACD.  Arabians are a great breed too.
:)  :)  :)

If you are still intent on finding a breeder / puppy, make sure
you find a reputable breeder and not just a backyard puppy mill.
ACD's are SUPPOSED to have a tail.  Check out:
