I would love to be a ''real" endurance rider. My dream is to do Tevis.

Then DO IT! That is what got me hooked. I went horse camping at Wendell Robie Park. Weaver was just a little kid then (well, now he's a teenager and still my "baby"). We rode on the trails, camped with 'endurance riders', who mesmerized me with stories, and show and tell (mostly showing and telling of various bionic body parts---wow, I wanted to be just like them!!). After riding on the trail, I was HOOKED. My favorite all time photo is one of me'n Weav standing next to a WST sign. My 2nd favorite photo is one of me'n Weav going over Cougar Rock, a few years later. Our second attempt. Our first resulted in failure, which only made the success when we did succeed all that much more sweet. We started out on an unsanctioned 25 mile 'endurance ride'. They weren't sanctioned then, and I didn't care. Along the way, I figured out that it's not just the destination, but the journey that is the real important part. I'm still on my journey.

This is my favorite quote, which I know has inspired a few friends of mine to "go for it". :-)

Far better it is to dare mighty things,

to win glorious triumphs, even though

checkered by failure, than to rank

with those poor spirits who neither

suffer much nor enjoy much because

they live in the grey twilight that

knows neither victory nor defeat.

============================================================ They're athletes! This is a partnership between horse and rider - we don't have any jockeys out there, just pals and partners. We'd allow a rider with a broken foot, a sore back and a nasty cold to compete - but we would never let a horse in a similiar condition hit the trail. ~ Dr. Barney Flemming DVM
