Re: [RC] [RC] Trail Judges needed??? - Howard Bramhall

This is getting silly here. Look, I've ridden in the top ten, did it several times last year on "EL Whacko," and, I'm telling you, those who do this know who is in front of them, by how much, what weight class that person is in, and what they need to do to pass them. Someone is not going to be able to magically appear from 8th place to 1st without those 6 others inbetween knowing that something's not right. Do you think those 6 others are going to keep their mouths shut about this?

And, they will make an issue about it right then and there. People who compete like this are not going to be giving anything away. They will stir up a fuss and they will do it at the ride. Nobody, at least in the top ten, is going to be able to get away with this sort of thing. I have yet to see a ride where that would be possible at all. Just not going to happen!

If we want judges, let's get some stewards involved who are more concerned with the welfare of the horse and are checking out what is going on during the vet holds. How the horses are eating, drinking and faring before they go out again.

The people can police themselves when it comes to trail cutters and cheaters. INtegrity is pretty much a big factor in this sport and if you ain't got any someone will be sure to point it out, not only to you but to management, in this kind of situation. Endurance riders are anything but shy. If this really did happen, the person who knows about it and didn't do anything about it at the ride is almost as guilty as the one who supposedly cut trail. Most riders would save themselves the hassle of the 100 bucks filing fee and protest procedures. They'd take care of this at the ride. I know I sure would.

Howard

Another option is to have tokens out on strategic places on the trail, particularly at places where riders could be tempted to take shortcuts. If they take the shortcut, they miss the token and get completion only or whatever the RM deems is appropriate. chris

After hearing rumors over the last few weeks about someone cutting trails "will not mention names" to finish in the top 5 at Million Pines I think it is time to start having some type of Trail Judge "check in's" that change locations on the trails with out the riders knowing where they are located. I think this will either stop the few people that cut trails to finsih in the top 10 or will stop the rumors once in for all.
