Here in SE Virginia, we're having our first week of 80+ temps, and I'm taking
advantage of the heat & humidity to condition for upcoming rides. What amazed
me is how "whupped" my very fit horse got in just 15 minutes of riding
yesterday. It took almost 2 hours to make it through a 10 mile loop we'd
normally zip through in about 45 minutes. A deep stream crossing mid loop
helped him cool out, but respiration & heart rate were elevated after even a
short canter. What a wake-up call that was! Other than slowing WAAAAY down and
using lots of water, do any of you have any comments/suggestions on
conditioning for hot, humid rides?
