If your ranching family ranches on public land, you cannot expect to
be beyond criticism or oversight. As a bonus, you are apparently
getting the usual western identity ego boost out of
it,subsidised.Grow up.

Ray, listen up. Ranchers are NOT subsidized. Many HAVE gone out of
business--not because they COULDN'T make a living if left to their own
devices, but because the losses inflicted on them by the Federal
Government have tipped the balance.

You say you have plenty of nice fat Angus in your area. Well, you know
where many of the top breeding animals to PRODUCE those nice fat Angus
come from? Two of the top breeders in the country are right here in Lemhi
County. I'll lay odds that there are producers in your area that have
genetics from good rural "public lands" Angus cattle in their herds.
Additionally, shrinking the market makes the prices go up. If you run a
major portion of the American cattlemen out of business, your nice comfy
little pasturelands breeders may find that the entire business is
affected, and may well be impacted, too--never mind that the price you
find at the supermarket may well go beyond what your pocketbook can bear.

If you are dishing out advice to "grow up", I would submit that part of
"growing up" is learning to get the facts about things before you spout
off. You might want to start by learning the facts of the beef industry
and the cattleman's interaction with public lands yourself before you put
your foot any further down your own throat. You might even want to study
the economic structure of several western states--including where the
taxable income comes from (since so much land is federal and does not
provide a tax base in and of itself)--before you spout off about the
economics of the public lands.

Keep in mind that if the public lands don't bring some income into the
federal coffers, then anything that goes on to benefit those lands has to
come out of YOUR pocket.

Additionally, very dollar earned on public lands circulates through the
economy just like every dollar earned elsewhere--something like 7 or 8
times. Every time it is taxed. Here in the West, virtually every dollar
in the economy is tied somehow to public lands--without using those lands
in a functional manner, several western states would be broke, never mind
what those same citizens contribute to the federal coffers.

Perhaps you need to go back to Basic Economics 101 and learn about money,
Ray.
