Re: [RC] ultra sound - Rae Callaway

Hope, in my experience with broodmares, vets and
ultrasounds, the test is pretty darned accurate, BUT
is only as good as the operator!

Oh yes. 3 years ago a vet told me that two of my mares were not pregnant at
a 30 day ultrasound check. Since we were getting into the summer heat, I
decided to put off rebreeding until spring. I started to get suspicious
about one mare in January and had her rechecked - yup, definitely in foal
and she had a gorgeous filly in April. The other mare turned out to also be
pregnant, but we didn't find out until mid February that she was and she
foaled out in mid March! It did throw off my plans, but I love my two
fillies. We stopped using that vet for anything reproductive after she
started making similar mistakes with my friends mares. The most recent
foaled 2 weeks ago - about 6 weeks from her expected due date, but that foal
was NOT a preemie! He was fully formed and HUGE. What was scary is that
the vet had told my friend that the mare was not prego and they gave her the
shot to short cycle her to breed again!

They're athletes! This is a partnership between horse and rider - we don't
have any jockeys out there, just pals and partners. We'd allow a rider with
a broken foot, a sore back and a nasty cold to compete - but we would never
let a horse in a similiar condition hit the trail.
