Re: [RC] Quotation from Leslie Beyers - Barbara McCraryThe quotation at the end of Heidi's message reminds me of two particular moments in my endurance experiences: The first one was the moment I sighted the Great Salt Lake Desert on the first AERC sanctioned XP ride in 1983. I remember thinking "Oh, my God" and really meaning it in the most reverent kind of way. The second moment was my first sighting of Death Valley on the first occurrence of The Death Valley Encounter. I had never seen Death Valley before. On both occasions, I was mounted on the same little horse, my beloved Courage, who is now in horse heaven. I plan to have a bronze plaque made for him with the following words....."From his back, I discovered the world." He lies along one of our trails, next to his old buddy, "Grey" (whose epitaph reads, "Nobility without arrogance...."). Darn these horses, they really worm their way into our lives and stay in our memories forever, don't they? You can't beat us - we have 2 that were free (actually 3, but one will never do a ride).Well, you're right that TANSTAAFL, but we're similar--I paid $1000 for my foundation stallion, who was my first 1000 mile (and 2000 mile) horse. I traded one of his daughters for the mare that was the second one, and his son that I raised was my third one... And the rest of you are right--the purchase price is a dropin the bucket... <g> Heidi ============================================================ The whole ride experience can be very hard, and at times you question why you put yourself through such abuse. But then you remember all those moments when you pop up over a hill and are suddenly surrounded by the most stunning views. It's just you and your horse and for a moment time stops and you can hear the angels sing. Therein lies the addiction, at least for me. ~ Leslie Beyers ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================ ============================================================ REAL endurance is taking your non-horsey family to a ridecamp with you! ~ Heidi Sowards ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================
