Re: [RC] Horse problem/interpreting blood analysis - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVM

I agree with Heidi that you're deriving way too much from mild abnormalties
in a routine CBC/panel. I'd put more faith in the incidence of colic and
would agree with getting him scoped and onto some verified therapy if
confirmed.

Don't get too worried about ranges mildly outside normal. 99% of the time,
it isn't a problem. I don't recommend adding Red Cell for mild anemia, as
anemia is almost NEVER caused by dietary iron deficiency, and isn't resolved
by supplementation. In fact, the additional iron just interferes with other
minerals.

As for reading the CBC, try the below link. I need to update it, the
section regarding immune function parameters has some mistakes in it that I
need to change, but the rest should be useful.

Just because someone tells you that your horse isn't "fit" for
endurance...doesn't mean it isn't, it just means your horse isn't fit to be
"their" endurance horse! Go for it, you never know what you'll accomplish
with that "saddle horse" or "trail horse" of YOURS!
