[RC] Genetic diseases - k s swigart

Maggie said:

We are currently discussing HYPP, CID, and the new Poco Bueno thing
on the sidesaddle off-topic list (does that make sense?).
I want to explain to them how these things happen...

HYPP is a dominant trait (so a horse need only inherit it from one
parent for the disease to express itself; however, some horses live long
happy lives with the disease and it can be "managed" with diet, etc.).

SCID is a recessive trait (so a horse must inherit the flawed gene from
both parents to express the disease, however the disease will kill the
horse within just a few months of its life).

I don't know anything about any "new Poco Bueno thing."

They're athletes! This is a partnership between horse and rider - we don't
have any jockeys out there, just pals and partners. We'd allow a rider with
a broken foot, a sore back and a nasty cold to compete - but we would never
let a horse in a similiar condition hit the trail.
