[RC] No Hands Bridge Story (was Steere) - trailsz

In 1991, I had camped at the Auburn Fairgrounds to pre-ride the Tevis trail with my horse, Pandora's Pixy.  She was young and green, and I wanted to aquaint her with this portion of the trail, which we would most likely be riding in the dark on Tevis.  So one afternoon I rode out to No Hands Bridge, crossed to the Cool side, and turned and started back across the bridge.  Looking out over the bridge ahead of us, I was astonished to see a deer sprinting dead down the center of the bridge, heading straight for us!  My heart froze; Pandora hadn't seen the deer yet, but I was visualizing a nasty wreck when she did.  There was no where to go but back or over the side, and, three guesses how I felt about that!  At that instant, the deer spotted us, and to my amazement, leaped off the side toward the rocky bank.  I didn't look down to see the landing.  Pandora never spooked, and we continued uneventfully back to the Fairgrounds.  I don't know if she ever saw that deer, but I'll never forget it!

Sarah Zegers

   "You will go out in joy
     and be led forth in peace;
      the mountains and hills
      will burst into song before
          you,
      and all the trees of the field
        will clap their hands."  Isaiah 55:12
