A deterrent to what?
That being said, I would always, if at all possible, have my horse necropsied.

most of the people responding to this are ones like us, we would want to know what went wrong. however, being totally honest, we all know that there are a number of riders who simply use horses, use them up, get another, etc. and just don't care.

another suggestion to this thread: designate $1 per ride entry to a special fund which would be used to finance the vet bill (for the necropsy, not treatment) and disposal cost of any horse that died or was euthanized at a ride. further it probably would be helpful knowledge wise if any horse that died or was euthanized within 1 week after a ride be necropsied also -- AERC could, from this fund, also pay for a basic necropsy and disposal if the information was submitted and payment applied for, again to further the knowledge of what went on.

i know of one local horse that was euthanized aprox. a week after competing in Tevis as it developed severe laminitis.
