Re: [RC] Olympics and endurance? - Jackie Winkleman

Yes. Some rides probably aren't very interesting to
watch - but, I'd still rather watch a horse run in
circles than basketball or ice skating...(just my
opinion!)

I am not saying it SHOULD be an Olympic sport, but
what would it hurt? It could possibly promote and
educate!

Ah! But here's the trick. If the world were getting
new riders in the
rather more laid back traditions of the US,
Australia, the UK, and
other parts of Europe that would be fine. I made
the effort to go to
the Pan Ams when I was in the US and I saw the sort
of ride you
envision. If you go to a ride in the Middle East
you will see
something else entirely. We are comparing apples
and dates here.

Why don't we want new people? Everyone starts out
"new."

I know if I would have known more about endurance
riding, I would have started out a lot earlier.
It
was the sport I was looking for - just didn't know
it
was there (and so local). I was not doing a whole
lot
with my horses until I began endurance riding and
compeditive trail riding. I was sick of the
"showring," but wasn't ready to get rid of my
horses -
thank goodness. This is something I can do all by
myself and don't have to have a purebred horse.

I don't think that if people saw this sport at the
Olympics that people would just say, wow, that
looks
easy - i'm gonna go out and ride 50 miles. A
person
with any common sense would think wow - that looks
like a lot of really hard work!

Who is to say that the other sports are
"spectator"
sports? Like basketball - my dad is a basketball
coach - but i still don't see any point in
watching
it. It doesn't interest me at all - but some
people
do like to watch it. I would rather sit out in
the
woods along a trail and watch horses ride by -
kind of
like when you are riding past people's houses at
the
local endurance rides and the people are sitting
out
on their porches watching the horses and riders go
by.
