Re: [RC] Olympics and endurance? - Jackie Winkleman

Why don't we want new people? Everyone starts out
"new."

I know if I would have known more about endurance
riding, I would have started out a lot earlier. It
was the sport I was looking for - just didn't know it
was there (and so local). I was not doing a whole lot
with my horses until I began endurance riding and
compeditive trail riding. I was sick of the
"showring," but wasn't ready to get rid of my horses -
thank goodness. This is something I can do all by
myself and don't have to have a purebred horse.

As a teenager, I know my horses, FFA, and 4H kept me
out of trouble and helped me to learn responsibilty.
I think the same would apply for endurance riding (or
any type of riding to keep them busy) for youngsters.

I don't think that if people saw this sport at the
Olympics that people would just say, wow, that looks
easy - i'm gonna go out and ride 50 miles. A person
with any common sense would think wow - that looks
like a lot of really hard work!

Who is to say that the other sports are "spectator"
sports? Like basketball - my dad is a basketball
coach - but i still don't see any point in watching
it. It doesn't interest me at all - but some people
do like to watch it. I would rather sit out in the
woods along a trail and watch horses ride by - kind of
like when you are riding past people's houses at the
local endurance rides and the people are sitting out
on their porches watching the horses and riders go by.

I would gladly welcome new people to the sport! We
ALL started out new.

OK, but why do we need advertisement? I think the
sport has plenty of
growth. Not so sure we need more "new people" coming
in the sport at this
time. Would we get folks who have never ridden in
their life, decide that it
looks easy, and they could go ride a horse 50 or 100
miles...and go to the
Olympics too? Also, it is NOT a spectator sport like
the other horse events.

Just my opinion but I think it would be good
advertisement, as some people don't even know that
endurance riding exists. Some people may have
heard
of it, but don't know what it really is. (I know
a
lot of people that have horses tell me that there
is
no way possible that I ride my horse 50 miles in a
day! Not my thin little mare! When I am quite
sure
that I do.) It could sort of serve as an
education
for others... It may even get people interested
in
the sport - recruitment...
Heck, if other equine sports are in the Olympics,
why
not? Why let them get all the glory?

Is there anyone here that truly thinks that
having
Endurance riding in the
Olympics would be a positive thing for the
sport? If
so, why...as I just
don't see it.
