Re: [RC] Improving the walk, was pacing anglo - Heidi Smith

The best way I know to encourage a horse to reach out at the walk is to give a light squeeze with the leg, on alternating sides, as the horse's hind leg on that side is in flight.  This encourages the horse to reach further under himself with that hind leg and lengthen his stride.  This is one of those subtle things that one has to learn by practice in order to get the timing right, and may have to continue for miles at a time.

And of course, if one never walks because it is too slow, there is also no chance to improve.  :-)

Barbara, How DO you teach a horse to lengthen in the walk.  I have an Anglo-arab, walks slower than molasses.  Can't stand it!  We almost never walk cause its too damn slow.  He just mosies along, other horses pass, then he trots to catch up.
