Subject: Re: [RC] When to call animal control?

For example, our horses (even the one that is retired)
never go more
than 8 weeks without farrier care. Some people think 12 weeks is OK
(IMHO, this is borderline OK), others go to twice a year
(bad, but is
it abuse?). Where do you draw the line? When should animal
control be
involved?

Sorry, David, but I nearly rolled on the floor in laughter
when I read this one. My broodmares and younger geldings
live "out".

OK, OK it was just an example. Over here in the mud, if you don't trim them
ALL the time, they get elf feet.

One of the reasons I chose that as an example was that one of the problems
on this side of the Cascades is that if someone grows up in an area like
your's, they expect not to need farrier care, and consider it a luxury. If
they're not smart enough to realize that they aren't at home any more and
things change, then the horses do suffer. You put a horse in a small 1 acre
field (or less), not a rock in sight, and then don't trim them, there will
be problems. You're keeping horses in what is close to a natural environment
for them - this area isn't.

You can run into the same thing back east where the ground tends to be more
clay or sand with few to no rocks. So over here, if you didn't get regular
farrier care for a horse, you'd end up with extremely screwed up feet and
joints - I'm sure you can explain the consequences better than I can because
you're a vet and I'm not.
