Re: [RC] earthquake - Lynn Kinsky

Everyone I've talked to has had little or no damage-- perhaps some plates, a TV fallen off the shelf, etc. Local news reports few injuries. It seems that the only significant damage that we are hearing about here happened to the one building that was a source of controversy as the owners had been dragging their feet on retrofitting even thought they had been requested to do so many times. This was a tragic accident which could have been avoided. The brick buildings across the street and just down the block which had been "retro'd" faired very well. It seems that brick and mortar do not do well in earthquakes. Thank God there are not a lot of earthquakes on the East Coast or mid-west where bricks abound.
The latest news is that we will not be asking for outside help in rescue or cleanup as the bulk of the damages were minor. This certainly goes against the three little pig theory. Give me a thatched house over a brick one anytime in California!

Once the New Madrid fault zone lets go again (http://quake.ualr.edu/public/nmfz.htm) (http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/prepare/factsheets/NewMadrid/), which the USGS says is certain in the next 50 years, midwestern and eastern buildings will be put to the test and municipalities that have been dragging their feet on new building codes and seismic retrofitting will be in the spotlight.

I like our California wood and stucco buildings (earthquake and fire resistant)!
