[RC] Robert E. Lee Re his mount Traveller - Thiessej

Traveller was Robert E Lee's favorite horse. He had 3 horses with him during the war and they were all American Saddlebreds or American Saddlers as they were called at that time. The South was primarily mounted on Saddlers or horses related to them like Walkers.
Some interesting read can be done about Morgan's raiders. They at one point got caught on the wrong side of the confederate union  line. There was approximently 5000 Southerns and they were pursued by 15000 Yankees. They were pursed for a couple of weeks and they averaged 40 miles a day with on average 2 running battles. The Southerns mounted on Saddlebreds escaped with only 600 losses and the Yankess had the luxury od switching mounts that were brought in by the railroad. Talk about an edurance test. rember these people did not have prepared electrolytes or fresh water or feed when needed. The horses were fed at night by grazing only when they felt safe.

Some interesting reading in a book called "The Horse American Made".
