I know it has been suggestred in the south by vets to stall or sheet a light colored horse in the daytime and turnout at night instead.(or use a fly sheet with uv protection.)Laurie

You cannot worry about "tumors or melinomas" in horses
just because they are grey or appys. I have had
several horses that have been appys, and grey / whites
are my favorite colors for horses. I had one grey
(arab something cross) that had so many melanomas.
Little teeny ones on face and back. A a bunch of
nickle sized ones on his butt around his anus. He
had one huge one (the size of a poop ball)hanging from
underneath his tail near the body. I had him for
several years and then one day the huge one fell off,
it was a gukky mess for a while and then when it
healed up all the little ones also went away. It was
bizzarr and the vets had no answers for me about it.
He lived to be about 30. I had an arab a few years
ago that had some in the girth area. They also
dissappeared later on. I had one appy that had
sarcomas on her face and belly and a homeopathic salve
made out of bloodroot took care of them. I sold her
a year ago and her current owner says she gets them
every now and then and the blood root will take care
of it every time. Some get them and some don't but
don't pass up a good horse because they MAY get
tumors. That would be a shame. Basically all grey
horses have a good chance of getting melanomas and
appaloosas are prone of sarcoids. At least that is
what my vet says.
