I don't understand the lack of reporting from the AERC in this area. It makes no sense to me that the issue is in the forefront of the organization and yet factual information is not maintained and presented to the membership.

I partially agree with John Bass's comment, that detailed questions and recommendations should, in the case of AERC policy, be directed to the relevant AERC committees.

But the overall issue of safety within the sport of endurance is much broader than any single organization. It may be time for the FEI to mandate that each of the national federations report treatment and fatality statistics annually and that the FEI take the lead in supporting the general publication and analysis of this information.

It would be nice to see the endurance community world wide address this issue up front and in the open so as to insure that rumors are not propagated and that we have a valid basis to move forward our ability to properly maintain a safe environment for competition.

I would rather see the AERC log-jam broken by a collaborative effort from the world-wide endurance community than from external investigative reporting which will, in the end, provide only antidotal and "from a credible source" kinds of information.

I would rather see a systematic collection of information upon which we can all build toward a safer environment of competition than ad hoc dissemination of hearsay:(

p.s.

I think ridecamp has as readers, members from all of the various countries that do endurance. Keep this in mind as we move this and other endurance issues through the mill. We can tend to present a very North American point of view - which is very narrow in the current world of endurance.

The US endurance population is MAYBE 20% or the total endurance world. (Please note that the 20% number is totally made up:) So by simple extension, if there were @10 equine fatalities and @200 treatments (both numbers made up) in the AERC last year, then world wide, one would expect @50 fatalities and @1000 treatments.
