RE: [RC] New Rider Proposals - Teri

My personal feelings and I have ridden in the Midwest, in Texas and
California and now in Florida. Florida weather is the hardest to ride in.
WHY! Because of the natural elements. HEAT, HUMIDITY and DEEP SAND.......

Here is my thinking and maybe, Truman you might have stats on this, are
there more lameness pulls in the west due to the rocky terrain than there is
in the southeast. And because of the heat, humidity and DEEEEEEEP sand
wouldn't their be more metabolic pulls than in the west. I would like to
see stats on this subject. I am very curious.

You're right Truman, I have never had a horse treated and pray to God (or
whoever) that I never do.
It could happen at any time and I am VERY aware of that.

As a "novice" endurance rider I personally resent that other novice riders
are trying to shove news rules down our throats.

If the HWC feels that changing/adding some new criteria will indeed help
save horses, I am all for it.
But, the bottom line comes down to the rider's judgment of just how his
horse is doing.

Howard (and like I said, I do enjoy some of his stories....I am not a
member
of the I hate Howard club) for all his passion about this subject, is
grasping at straws and until the HWC or the vets can actually define
reasons
for horses dying, it's a case of make more rules and more rules and change
the intent of the sport. I have personal friends that have ridden over
8,000 and even over 18,000 endurance miles with no metabolic treatment,
one
of them being a consistent front runner and BC.
I grant you that there is some amount of luck involved but it also proves
that it can be done. And, what accounts for the multi day rides and XP
rides
success rate?? MOST of it comes down to the rider's judgment or lack of
that
gets a horse into trouble.

I "picked on" Howard merely because he is the loudest voice on ridecamp
about this issue and I don't think he (or anyone else with so few miles,
myself included) should be the new kid in school and be given the
credibility that "old time true endurance riders" should have.
