Re: [RC] Selenium again - Heidi Smith

I live in the Great Lakes region - very selenium deficient.

Where in the heck can 3mg per ounce E and Se supplement be found? Equine
America used to sell it, but no more. Uckele has the best "bang for the
buck", but I'd have to use one and a half ounces to get the 3mg. Pretty
soon
her grain won't cover her supplements! I'm exaggerating, but if there's
too
much powder, my mare won't eat it.

EqU-SeE is 6 mg per ounce (and as another poster pointed out, is dosed by
the teaspoon--1 mg per teaspoon) and can still be purchased at K-V. The
powder problem can be dealt with by feeding just a handful of Equine Senior
with it--it sticks beautifully to the tacky-textured Senior.

Speaking of testing, my test results said that whole-blood analysis is a
longer-tem indicator of selenium status than serum selenium. Is this true,
or simply something Michigan State is selling? (As another alternative,
Uckele offers hair analysis for about $200 -- the cost isn't worth the
benefit to me if blood analysis is good enough.)

Whole blood is the appropriate sample for the most accurate selenium
testing. Don't bother with the hair analysis for current information--it
just tells you what it was 9 months ago.

Heidi
