My horse was treated for EPM last year; here's what I gathered from her vets. 1) if you live where possums are there is about an 80% chance that your horse is a carrier of the protozoa. The *highest* percentage of carriers is around the large tracks, especially Kentucky. 2) TBs seem to be a tad more suspetible to being carriers, but not actually contracting the disease. 3) Once the horse is a carrier they are at risk for developing symptoms of the disease. There is no real rhyme or reason why one horse gets it and not another. The treatment when I did it was very hard on the horse, but if Star had really had it then it would have been worth it. 4) It takes at least 1 month after being infected with the protozoa for symptoms to show. New developments could have come out, it's been a little over a year since my mare was treated, but I hope this answers your questions.
