Thanks for clearing that up Heidi. We are in a Part of Utah where there is no Selenium and we have to feed a supplement. We just have lots of sand and red rock. The riding is good though. Norma Birch

E-Se is the trademarked brand name of the injectable selenium and vitamin E
product put out by Schering company.  The above does not mean that one
cannot supplement a diet with selenium and vitamin E to the point of
bringing the diet up to the needed quantities.

The reason that the injectable is on the list is that it has other
substances in it that serve as carriers that are NOT part of a normal diet,
and it is those carriers that are illegal.  The carriers are pretty
short-lived, so if you administered the injectable on Sunday when you got
home from the last ride, they should be clear by the following weekend.

I can't imagine wanting to administer E-Se really close to a ride
anyway--for one, the selenium takes at least 48-72 hours to be assimilated
by the cells in the body to even begin to have any benefit, and for two,
unless you give it IV, it can make a heckuva sore spot in the muscle where
it is administered.

So don't panic if you are feeding selenium at a level to keep it in balance
in your horse's diet--this isn't about that.  :-)
