Re: [RC] ?? re:giving supplements - Susan Garlinghouse

There are a few nutrients in the vit-min mix that are heat-labile
(translation, will go kaput in hot water), but nothing critical for the most
part. It's unlikely that your water is SO hot that it will really cause an
issue. My suggestion would be to mix the hot water with the grain, pellet
potion of the mash first and mix it up a bit, then add the extra vitamins.
The temp will have dropped enough by then to not be an issue.

Mixing a "twice-a-day" dose of vitamins in just once a day is fine, you're
just missing out a little on feed efficiency. Some of the water-soluble
vitamins such as B vitamins (including biotin), and C will be supplied
slightly in excess of absorption ability and so you'll lose more as they're
flushed out in the urine. But it's not a big issue, certainly not a
problem, and when you can't keep your horses in the back yard, you do the
best you can.

Good luck,
Susan G

Subject: [RC] ?? re:giving supplements

In the winter I usually mix my horses' supplements, including vitamins and
probiotics in the form of ABC Plus and/or Winners Daily in a a mash of
oats,
beet pulp and alfalfa pellets. The water used to mush it all up stays
really
hot from being boiled in the AM and carried in a Thermos til my PM visit
to
the barn...
Question is- am I decreasing the effectiveness of the supplements with the
almost boiling water? And, for those using Winners Daily- directions call
for a scoop twice a day, but, since I only give the mash once, is there a
problem with giving the full amount at a single dose?
Thanks in advance! Nikki- belatedly adding, as well, both my
appreciation for all the firefighters AND my best wishes for Scott and
Ginger
and their family in recovering from the loss of their home- So glad you
are
all safe....
