[RC] Age to Start a Baby - Tamara Taylor

Hi all,

I have a lovely Canadian Warmblood yearling gelding named Amos. His dam was
Anglo-Arab and sire was Hannoverian-TB cross. He is currently standing 15 hh at
the whithers and going through a growth spurt so he is very 'downhill' at the
moment.

My question is...when is the best age to start this 'type' of horse?

So far he is very well halter broke to catch, lead and tie, stands nicely for
grooming, vet and farrier, easily picks up all four feet, used to trailer rides
and being led around the indoor or outdoor arena by himself. I've rubbed him
from head to toe with towels, rain coats, plastic bags, ropes, etc. Basically,
I've played with him a lot and haven't done anything 'high impact'. He is kept
on pasture with another warmblood yearling and two old Arab mares. He is an all-
around pleasant and easy going fellow. Clipper training and wash rack training
will have to wait til spring as it is currently -27C here tonight and he needs
all the dry wooly coat he can get!

He will be two years old in the spring. Many people are urging me to back him
in the spring but I would like to wait til he is atleast 3, if not 4, before
doing so. Are my instincts correct?? If I choose NOT to back him til he's 4 is
it ok for me to start ground driving, leading him under saddle and lunging when
he's 2? Or should I wait til he's a little older to start lunging him??

I have high hopes for this young one and don't want to rush him. I hope to use
him for dressage, combined training and endurance (if he's not too big of a
giant!).

Thank you muchly in advance,

Tamara Taylor
