[RC] Penicillin Shots for Horses--Vets? - Val Nicoson

My friend's horse has a cut on his heel bulb on the
front. He has some infection in it. He is being
provided PenG shots for this.
My friend gave this horse a shot today and he went
wacky about the stall out of his mind for about 5 mins
before he settled down. He has received this shot a
couple times already...just today didn't go well...
she thinks she might have gotten a vein.
She wants me to give the shot tomorrow as she will be
out of town. The horse belongs to a mutual friend of
ours who is a green owner and doesn't like to give
shots.
The needle we are using is 1-1/2 and 18 gauge. The
shot is for 20cc.
So far his neck has been used. She tried the
hamstring area but the horse kept moving away. We are
being "safe"...the stall is half-height in front so we
are keeping this between us and the horse (horse is
green).
I haven't given too many shots myself...but I have
done it between the front legs on my own horse. Is it
OK to give 20cc of PenG inbetween the front legs of
this 1000# plus stocky QH? Or would the neck and/or
upper buttocks be better?
Thanks for the advice.
