Re: [RC] A Kindler Gentler Temp Take - Truman Prevatt

The temp is going to be different at different places on the horse. The rectal temp will be higher than the skin temp. The rectal temp will also be less than the core temp. These devices are calibrated to read accurately for humans. The human skin temp may reflect the human rectal temp better than the horse's skin temp reflects the horses rectal temp. If you are getting comparable readings but 3 degrees off, add three degrees to the reading and you will be close.

You are more interested in the delta from normal anyway and that delta should be very close.

FYI, there are a couple of alternative ways to take a horse's temperature: on board temperature thingies (I think Roger R. makes one?), and a thermometer that you use by placing it on a human's forehead.?
I've tested the latter and it is consistently comparable to the rectal, but (at least mine was) always 3 degrees lower.? You slide it under the saddle in a VC and it beeps in about 10 seconds when its done.
What I'm waiting for is a combination HRM, temp, and Timex GPS.? Roger--are you working on this?
