[RC] THE BASICS - USING STETHOSCOPE - Nell Lindquist

Okay, I realize that this is like sacrilege for someone who aspires to
be a distance rider to admit, but I have a really hard time using a
stethoscope to listen to my horse's heart rate. I have practiced on two
different horses, used different stethoscopes, tried alternate spots
behind the left leg, and I still have difficulty hearing the heart beats -
I hear hair scratching, joints creaking (mine), lungs whooshing, etc.
Occasionally I catch a couple of heart beats, but then lose it. I can hear
gut sounds loud and clear, I can hear my own heart, my kid's, my
dog's...my cat was highly offended though and wouldn't stand for it.
For those you who are vets, or other medical types, is there some trick
to holding the scope, so you don't hear your own knuckles creaking, etc.?
Is it just a matter of time and lots more practice? I'd really like to
master this very simple tool!
---NELL
