Re: [RC] [RC] [Guest] advice needed on choked horse - Ridecamp Moderator

"Laurie Durgin" <ladurgin@xxxxxxx>
Sounds like a 'very new vet' to me. Either that or thay had a bad experience or listened to the wrong professor or something. My mare has choked . I called the vet and he tubed her. She had 'gulped down some leftover beetpulp after opening the other horses stall who didn't finsich hers. Vet didn't act like it was a big deal. Said some horse just bolt their food and to put some large rocks in it. I realised then, she always ate real fast, just didn't realise it was a problem. Second my yearling did once, on dry beet pulp, he really chows down too. He cleared his within a 1/2 hour. He has since slowed down in his eating, though is very diligent about it. And I feed only soaked beet pulp now (it was those large pellets).
I have been around some hunter barns working off and on and never heard a vet give that advice before.Sounds way overportective to me. Just put some large rocks in when you feed grain. And I've heard sometimes pellleted food seems more likely to choke than ,say straight grain. I have never heard of this kind of regimun for 'choke" before, and my 3 vet horse books don't say too to that kind of stuff either.
