Re: [RC] [Guest] advice needed on choked horse - Ridecamp Moderator

"Robin & Mary-Anne Dorchester" <mad1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
Hi,

I had a horse choke once. Our vet thought damage may have been done to his
oesophagus while she was trying to dislodge the blockage so we had to take
special care of him for a couple of weeks. She didn't want him eating
anything scratchy like hay so we basically fed him really wet beet pulp for
a while and kept a close eye on him. She also suggested antibiotics just in
case but I am against antibiotics prophylatically (sp?) so we took his temp
a couple of times a day for a week and he was just fine. The horse is just
fine now, still bolts his food but hasn't choked again and he's been on a
normal diet of grass, hay and grain.

I would ask your vet why he thinks this horse requires such drastic
treatment. It could be that significant damage was done or it could be that
your vet is overly cautious.

Mary-Anne
