[RC] advice needed on choked horse - Jonni Jewell

My 2yo choked tonight on some grain. From what the vet has said he is
basically going to have to have extremely special care for the rest of his
life now. Things such as he can only have chopped and wet hay, his grain has
to be wet, all food and water must be at chest height from now on.<<<

Wow, that seems pretty extreme. While I understand that once a horse has
choked, it is more prone to choke than one who has never done so, I have not
hear of such extreme measures for feeding for life after just one choke. Did
the vet determine that there was damage done to the horses esophagus?

I had a gelding that was prone to choke. He must have done it 8-12 times
over the years I had him. but I never did change his diet. What I DID change
was adding rocks to feed to slow him down, and I would wet the pellets we
fed with a LOT of water as I dumped them in his feeder to make them float.
That slowed him down too. I could have soaked them, but he would still bolt
his food. I never wet his hay. Just fed in a feeder that made him not able
to grab big bites quickly. Most of the chokes were mild, that he cleared
himself. But the vet had to fix a few, but still did not recommend any feed
changes.
