Re: [RC] [Guest] Horse wants to be first - Paul Latiolais

I have been working with that problem with my horse, since we started two years ago. He is better at every ride. It just takes awhile. I try to win the "little" battles and avoid the big ones where it is a fight and he is likely to win. As your horse gets older, he will improve too.

My horse also tends to be better behaved in smaller groups, but just last week I went out riding with a couple of endurance friends and it was like we were at the starting line again. It took quite awhile for him to settle down. He was ready for the "race". He recognized the horses from the last endurance ride, I think.

When I take my 7 yo Arab gelding out on the trail either alone or with two/three other horses he is very good. But, if there are more horses, say at a pleasure ride, he wants to pass every horse. When I don't let him, he rears, goes sideways, jigs, pops up etc. Eventually I want this guy for endurance but I don't want him like this or he'll tire himself out and/or injure himself. Any advise on how to break this attitude? I don't mind him being strong but taking a tantrum everytime is not okay.

Thanks,
Kathie
