Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Canadian Slaughter - Stephanie E Caldwell

Backyard breeder: Unlicensed general public who breed for the fun of
having
a baby (In the past two years, I have personally known three people just
in
my area, who have bred or are planning to breed their mare just for the
experience of having a baby.

So, any individual that has a mare and wants to breed her could not?

People who allow their stallions to breed indescriminately: In the past
two
years, I have personally known two people who purchased a mare in foal
without knowing it. The sellars either did not know, or did not plan for
the
stallion to breed those mares.

Accidents happen even at the best run operations. My mare has a history of
jumping in with the boys when she's in heat, thus far I've been lucky and
not gotten a baby I didn't want, but... :)

And I know that the animal overpopulation problem would not
exist if we did not allow it. We are the ones who created/allowed it, and
we
are the ones who have to live with it, or take control of it.

I don't really think it's fair to say that we have an overpopulation of
useable animals. I've been looking into adopting/rescuing an older equine
for my mother, but there are very few sound equines in adoption
organizations. And, the way that most rescues are run I personally would not
adopt a horse from them, even if it were what I wanted.

Is slautering excess animals after the fact more desireable than taking
control of the breeding?
OK, I guess that everyone feels that it is.

I am not a fan of slaughter, but there has to be a place for unuseable (for
whatever reason) animals to go. What's the best thing for them? Even in
responsible breeding situations you have some horses who can not/will not
ever be useable.

Steph
