[RC] BLM-Adopt a horse program - Hickory Ridge Arabians

Lisa Salas has asked that I comment on the proposal of the AERC working
with the BLM to find homes for Mustangs.

From a trails prospective we work every day trying to put together
partnerships that will inhance our trail preservation efforts. Not only do
we deal with all kinds of federal laws that effect access but occasionally
we encounter a land manager that has a negative or
preconcieved opinion about our access to OUR federal lands.

Working with the BLM to find a working home for mustangs seems to me to be
the right thing to do. It will foster good will between the AERC and the
BLM. It will provide good homes for the mustangs within our endurance
community. When putting together a business
deal we often use the term "win/win." That is what we have here by working
with the BLM. A win/win deal for both sides.
The issue was brought up that it is not fair to breeders who bring on
endurance horses each year. We breed for endurance and I could care less
if the mustangs are adoped at our rides. If someone wants a mustang then
that is what they are going to buy. There have been and
continue to be some very good mustangs out there in endurance land.
If you do not believe in the adopt a mustang program as run by the BLM,
just write your congressman. As long as the program exists we should take
advantage of it for our members. No one is forcing anyone to buy one of
the mustangs. Last time I checked it was still a free country and a free
economy. If you don't like it, then don't go the the ride that is
supporting the program. Its that simple.
