RE: [RC] related to hauling -(heads out windows) - McGann, Barb

Jim,

What about the "setting an example"/education side of this. What if there are
lesser experienced horsepeople watching you leave ride camp with the horses
heads out the window - they may not know that you stop at the end of the single
track. They then say to themselves, "Well, there goes Jim Holland, a respected
experienced horseman and he's letting the horses hang out. I'm going to try
that - I'm sure my horse would love it."

Also, people let it escalate. It worked fine on the dirt single-track, might
as well leave it open while we go down this two-lane, but still gravel, lightly
travelled road (haven't seen over 3 cars going by in hours). Then that works
OK, so it might be alright to leave it down on this paved, but slow back
country windy road that I won't drive over 45 on. That worked OK. Oops, we are
now on the 60 mile per hour highway, but I haven't found a place to pull off
yet!

Heard this exact story from a lady whose mare's entire nose was ripped off from
just about the halter down. UNfortunately, this mare lived for several days
until the vet finally told her that it would never be able to eat right.

Yep...."little piece of heaven" up here in North Georgia" :)

Hmmmm...you must live in California...no place there to let 'em hang
their heads out!

You're welcome anytime! C'mon down...be glad to show you. Doubters
welcome! <grin>

Ask anybody who has left Ridecamp behind me and waited while I stopped
to close my doors/screens when we left the single tracks.

Actually, it's not the only time. Sunny just LOVES truck stops. We
always eat there and leave his door down.. He likes all those
semi-double-clutching-dual-shifting-tractor-trailers with a bend in the
middle that go "Chew-Chew! Besides, attracts all the kids that come over
to scratch his ears and give him treats while he's hanging out the
window! Never fails to draw a crowd. Good publicity for horses!

IMHO, you're a little paranoid about this issue, but that's OK with
me...everyone's entitled to their opinion, right, wrong,
indifferent...or inconsequential! <grin>

The logic? They LIKE it...<<<

Mine would "like" a diet of all grain, corn, molasses and sweat spring
grass....but sometimes common sense lets us make better choices for the
horses for their health, safety and well being......

I can only imagine the images in still in the mind of Dawn (the friend of
the list member) of seeing a horses head that was ripped from it's
body....from something that could have been prevented so easily.....ahhhh,
but I bet those horses were "having so much fun" until the semi hit
them....yeah.....right......

Jonni (who somehow is doubting the "absolute only" time Jims horses hang
their heads out of the trailer are only on the dead end road, off the dead
end road, that has no rocks to fly up, no branches to hit their heads, no
traffic etc. etc. ......must be in "Perfectville")
