This is so true. There is an old story, I believe from the Nuremberg trials
after W.W.II. I'll butcher the paraphrasing badly, but it went something like
this....
An old Catholic Priest, a German, was asked how he could have allowed
the atrocities to take place in his country. He replied, "When they came for
the Gypsies, I was not a Gypsy and so I didn't stand up for them. When they
came for the academics, I was no academic, and so I didn't stand up for them.
When they came for the authors and artists, I was neither, and so I didn't
stand up for them. When they came for the Jews, I was not a Jew. I did not
stand
up. Then they came for the Christians...and there was no one left to stand
up for us."
Alliances are powerful political tools - and we better make some soon.
Those who would deny us the right to ride on OUR land have long understood the
theory of "divide and conquer." We better stand up for and support multiple
users...or there will be no one left to stand up for us.
:o)
