[RC] Big Horn saddles and trees - Linda Cowles

Hi Folks,

Big Horn has 7 different Endurance saddles built on 6 different trees in 15"
and 16" seats. I'll give you a run-down on them and some of the features.
Several are built on Equi-Fit flexible saddle trees. These are popular, but
tree flexibility is ***not*** the same as proper fit! The flex occur along
the length of the saddle, not in the shoulders where most saddle fit
problems occur. I've had several folks consign saddles "that the rep said
would fit any horse"...

Equi-Fit Flexible bars flexibility allows less restricted movement and bends
away from pressure; the flexibility improves a quality fit but will not make
a saddle fit!

When I get my site finished I'll start offering these things online.

As a rule of thumb, FQH Bars saddles fit Arabs and bull-dog QH's best, QH
bars works on Appendix style shoulders and the Semi QH Bars work best on
Foxtrotters and Tennessee Walkers.

SADDLE COMFORT
Big Horn Endurance Saddles come in 4 seat styles in 15" & 16" seat sizes. A
specific saddles comfort is dependent on how it fits an individuals frame,
but some seats have more padding than others. I find some saddles very
uncomfortable, but other riders are delighted with them. I've learned the
hard way to keep my mouth shut when someone climbs on a seat I can't stand!

STIRRUP PLACEMENT
Most or all of these trees limit the stirrup location to some extent, but
because the endurance saddles ship with nylon fender straps they can be
adjusted 1.5" to 2" by slipping the fenders backwards or forwards. To move
them, grip the fender leathers on either side of the tree and slide it back
and forth as you pull it forward or backward on the tree. Some of the trees
place the stirrups further back than others.

SEAT SIZE VS TREE LENGTH
I measured the trees under identical 14, 15, 16 & 17 inch seats in my
ultra-cheap saddles (the 499-502 Western Cordura series that I retail for
$285) and the tree extends along with the seat size, so I assume that this
happens with the other saddles also.
