[RC] Recovery after getting stitches - Lysane Cree

Hi,

My horse cut her leg open on the front of her hind
cannon bone on Friday evening and she needed stitches
(about 9-10) Her leg with the stitches swelled up by
the next day and it has stayed swollen from the top of
the hock down to her pastern. The vet suggested hosing
her leg, but she objects to that quite a bit and I
don't want her to hurt herself more. She is only 1.5
years old and I have been working on getting her used
to the hose, but she has a major objection to water on
her legs. I am wondering what my other options are?
Sponging cold water? Icing? I am worried about "tying
on" an ice pack and having it rub on the stitches and
maybe pull them out.
Also her good hind leg has been swelling up from
carrying all her weight on it. I am trying some
poultice and bandages to see how that helps. So far,
it seems to be doing her good, the swelling seems to
be going down on her good leg.
The vet said she should be inside two weeks, but I am
wondering if at some point I could hand walk her a
little just to get the circulation going in her legs.
Maybe one week after the stitches were done?

Lysane
