but only a few can go up to 75, and fewer still can do a 100.

I'm having a really good time today watching these few folks do the 100/80. I'm not riding (and have only ridden 1 100 miler ever), but watching them enjoy the day has been a treat. Across the board, they are smiling and riding and having a good time, but still very focused on their efforts and those of their mounts.

There are a few stressed contestants - strategies have changed over the course of the last 10 hours - some have backed off, some have pushed forward - others are contentedly holding their course. To each their own ride within the overall context of the competition.

There are some concerns and the horses are, in some cases, weary. The riders are for the most part adjusting to circumstances and continuing on. Howard Dean has pulled with a lameness issue 67 miles (in the 80). Everyone else is moving forward.

Not that having 50s and 30s running at the same time takes away from that. There is a corresponding flow through the day at those distances also, but Howard, for example, successfully completed a 50 (and a 30) today. It was the 80 that was the goal and that goal was illusive on this particular day.
