Re: [RC] [RC] racing to the finish line at any ride - john thunder

Odd,
Love your idea for the new bumper sticker and if you ever get them done, put me down for a dozen. Of course, you realize you are spouting heresy and can be buried up to your neck in the compost heap? For Howard, the name of the sport is 'Endurance' not speed racing and I suggest everyone make sure they read the e-mails from Bob, Louise, Nancy and Truman. Whether you agree with me or them or whatever, they do offer various experiences and points of view.

At the risk of making even more friends then I've already made, and in keeping with the 'to finish is to win', why don't they give awards for the first 5 or 10 or whatever B.C."s and just acknowledge whoever finished first? After all the sport is 'Endurance' as in ' to endure'. What better way to show how well you and your horse did then to be in the top 10 in condition at the end of the trying 50 or 100 or whatever?

Usually, our rides are out in the middle of nowhere and there aren't other riders on our trails. But sometimes we do have to share our trails. Not all equestrians share our enthusiasm about our sport.

John's point was that he felt the finish line was not safe. That is a valid point if indeed there were other riders on the trail. Whether or not racing to the finish line starts 300 yards back or a mile, it still needs to be safe. Not just for our riders, but for the community at large. That is ride managements responsibility. If someone would have gotten hurt, it could have been ugly for everyone involved. A legal disaster. We can't remove ALL risks, but we can make it less riskier.

By the way, how come we have to have trail etiquette for each other (like stopping so the other horse can drink, not passing faster than a trot) but not for anyone else on the trail?? Who cares, we are racing to the finish line! GET OUTTA THE WAY!! ( hey, new bumper sticker, "If you are not an endurance rider, get the hell outta the way!")

Ya know what's funny? Some of the very same people who say racing kills, are saying also, "Aw, don't take away the race to the finish.". Is this a confused lot, or what? Do I sound sarcastic?

I am sure the RM for this or any ride, will do their best to make sure it is safe, always. And Mr. Thunder, you can always volunteer to help plan the finish line for next year.

Lisa Salas, the Oddf aRM
