Re: [RC] How's Kat? - Lynne Glazer

Not burning anywhere near Kat, not even in her mountain range (Santa Ana mountains, inland side).

That San Diego ridecamper's house didn't burn after all, though flames were licking at her back fence. Whew.

Marshall Canyon, well, that burned. I mean, homes, a lot of stuff, the eq center for sure. I wonder if that golf course acted as a fire break at all. The way the flames are leaping across freeways, I doubt it had much effect with the winds. The fire leaped the 118 out in Simi Valley again this morning. I heard Happy Camp (conditioning area) was completely burnt.

Winds seem to be calm here despite high wind warnings, and we can see some blue sky (finally), but of course we can't see the San Gabriels (where Beth's fire is) or the San Bernardinos. Those unfamiliar with SoCal, we have 7 mountain ranges that make our valley, and even in the best of times we have a temperature inversion 300 days out of the year that traps warm air in the basin, with ocean breezes pushing the not-so-great air out towards the desert, where there's a crack between Idylwild and the SBs. The Santa Anas come from the northeast, I think, pushing it back in the opposite direction. The toilet bowl analogy comes to mind...but at least it's riding weather at least 300 days of the year--worth it. Santa Ana season is October to May, and this happening at the beginning of the season makes us all terribly nervous. Last year a troubled soul set a fire in Norco's riverbed that destroyed the western part of our ride's trail (making this mildly endurance related) and damaged/destroyed 5 houses, of course the winds made it way worse.

Her horses are on the side of a mountain somewhere down there. I hope that she is also north of the problem. I always hated fire season when I lived in Southern California and with family in Ojai and Ventura, I still worry a lot. Prayers and vibes for healing and safety coming from Egypt.
