[RC] Fires Calif. update - beth glover

Hi Ridecampers;

This morning I was awakened by the police at 4:00 a.m ( that was before we put our clocks back)  to help them to evacuate horses, our club has a phone tree. We could see the horrible familiar red glow over the hills. Last night we went to bed, worrying about our friend in San Bernardino, and the fire over there, also the fire in Alta Loma. That Alta Loma fire traveled all the way over, they said 15 miles or something, during the night. The fire line was 40 miles long today.

 I was really worried about Tiffany, she is out of town I think...where are you Tiffany? She showed me the trails up there in Alta Loma. I think one of my friends who lives up the street from her..about a mile and a half maybe, we think her house is burnt up. She had just bought a ranch for her morgan horses, and the sign on the road said, "Road Closed, severe fire danger" , That was the sign in front of her house.

Yesterday my neighbors evacuated horses from  Upland, and Alta Loma, and today they took them back, cause the fire had passed. Today the Alta Loma folks were taking horses from over here. Actually in La Verne, about 4 miles from my house.

We had to laugh at the police though, cause they are very sweet to always call the horse people to order an evacuation, and the folks around here are getting so savvy , that the job is  already done and then they call! This a.m. I called a friend who's horse was in the big Laverne stable...Marshall Canyon, and they had already evacuated. I believe that stable is all burnt up now, because homes south of it are burnt up. There was a Youth detention camp for juvenile delinquents, right across the road from the equestrian staging area, and the camp is all burnt up. That was north of the stable.

 This morning at 5:00 or so, I went out to look at the flames, from a distance so I wouldn't interfere, and I could see them from the 210 freeway in San Dimas. I went up to Sycamore canyon and they were already evacuating horses to Fairplex in Pomona and it was full of horses. Next they were going to Industry hills equestrian center, but there was a horse show, so there was only room to tie the horses to cross ties and stuff. We were thinking of going to Santa Anita, except for the Breeder's cup, we figured security would be so tight. But we were also thinking of going to Cal Poly if need be, and that would probably be better than Santa Anita. Right now we think they have extinguished the fires in La Verne, cause we drove out and see no more flames and the smoke was down and all the aircraft are gone. (Of course its dark now)

I am really worried about my friend who is a NATRC judge in San Bernardino, who lives in the area where the 15 and 215 freeway's merge, and it s very near Devore. We should have gone and dragged her out last night, but I couldn't leave cause my dad had just got home from the hospital with a heart attack. This morning we called and we thought she was virtually trapped, we couldn't get in anymore. The "Old Fire" and the "Grand Prix" fire had merged. They were leading escorts out to evacuate homes, and a few burnt up. I don't know where she is, none of my friends can find her. She was supposed to go to Apple Valley but the roads were closed. She had two horses with her, and a bunch of dogs...her husband is handicapped.   I am also worried about Bonnie...you out there MtnRhondi??? cause the fire seems to be heading that way too. And I am worried about my dog breeding friends in Crestline, and in San Bernardino...I would not be surprised if their houses had been burnt too.

As for ourselves, we seem to be safe for the moment, we are hoping that our big fire last year (Williams fire 60,000 acres) knocked down the brush enough to where it's not so hard to control. We still have charcoal trees.  I am very sad that my favorite trails in Alta Loma will now be charcoal, or non-existent. Our boarder is unable to fly home and help us with his horse, he is trapped in Vancouver. All the airports down here are delayed, closed or smoked out. We spent the whole day cutting down bushes and trimming trees and vines, even though we had a crew out 2 weeks ago. My neighbors are chain sawing like mad.

If anyone knows anybody at Cal Poly that we could call in the event that we need to evacuate, that would be very helpful .  I have a ranch about a mile from here, but the way this particular fire has been acting...with the winds and stuff, it could be dangerous at that ranch too. It would be better to be farther away, if need be. The humidity here is incredibly low, it was 9% and the horse's tails are sticking out electric! Somebody send us some humidity!!  You'all in the south! Send humidity!  Any ranches south of the 10 freeway, that could take horses, if you give us contact information to keep in case we need it, that would be great. We heard that there were fires in Norco, so we didn't contact friends there.

Thanks for any help, and all prayers.

Beth Glover (and to think I was gonna ask if it was okay to exercise my horse in light smoke.....)
