Re: [RC] French study on treated horses - Truman Prevatt

I'm just comparing the times to the times we see a lot of rides in the SE and 7 to 9 mph ride speed (including recovery times) is not burning the trail. And normally horses riding at that speed have little problem recovering. An 8 mph (7.5 minute miles) ride would put you doing a 50 in 6:15, many rides down here that's mid to back of the pack.  I would expect if anything that stands out it is the lack of experience on the horse. They were not ready for that distance at that speed. They needed to either run some more faster shorter rides or longer slower rides to get ready.

Yes, it is also strange to me the average speed of treated horse. One could suspect an error in the calculation of the average speed

Do not forget also that the recovery time counts in the calculation of the average speed. If you ride 18kph on the trail and need, lets say 30min to recover in total of the 2 vetgates (because horse is in distress), this will quite drastically reduce your average speed.

The interesting thing is the speed range. In mph that's about 7.8 to 9 mph and most were treated at about 50 miles. Depending on the course - that's not that fast. However, as you suggest the horses were inexperienced - which I take to mean not much base. Truman
