[RC] hind leg angulation - was Size of horse - Deanna German

I've had difficulty finding a clear description of how to identify 2
conformation issues-shoulder angle and "straight legs" - the latter in
particular reference to hind legs.

I too am interested in this subject since my just turned 8YO horse (brought
along veeerrry slowly and has done one measely endurance 50, a couple of
LD's and about 500 miles of CTR) has just been diagnosed with the beginnings
of arthritis in her hocks.

So all you conformation gurus, whether in endurance or not, tell me what I
need to look for and need to be wary of for my next horse in regards to the
hind end -- not just legs but hip length and angle compared to the femur,
pelvis positioning, and what to look at when the horse is moving laterally
to the viewer and away from the viewer. Just assume that the horse from the
loin forward is perfect and describe the perfect hind end and the least
desireable hind end for a performance horse. (Hopefully it will be what I
think I already have learned.)

If anyone has any moral support to offer me for the hock diagnosis, I'm all
eyes.

Deanna (very glad I brought this horse along slowly or I would have trashed
her)
