Re: [RC] [Guest] GastroGuard and Neighlox - Truman Prevatt

I went though an ulcer treatment last year after all the antiinflamatories treating WN. Cimetidine is 8 grams 3 times a day (every 8 hours) for up to 10 days ( for a 1000 pound horse). If you get it a Walmart it will cost about 10-12 bucks a day for a horse. But you will get a lot of funny looks and maybe some questions as to why you are buying so much. Gastro Guard runs about 60 bucks a day. When the generic human drug comes on the market in several years is Gastro Guard will be more more cost effective.

The Cimetidine worked just fine - at least in my case.

We have a mare at our barn that has been diagnosed with ulcers and our vet
is prescribing GastroGuard for 4wks followed by daily treatment with
Neighlox. I was just wondering if there are any less expensive
alternatives to treating the ulcers. The mare shows most of the classic
signs of ulcers, teeth grinding, sour attitude, poor condition. I know

the

active ingredient in GastroGuard is omeprozale. Would it be possible to
use the human form of Prilosec? Have not started on treatmenat yet, but
will do so within 24hrs. Thank you for any and all comments.

While GastroGuard may be a "better" treatment, there sure were a lot of
horses with ulcers treated quite successfully with cimetidine or ranitidine,
particularly in combination with sucralfate therapy early on, long before
the days of GastroGuard. Ranitidine used to be a bit pricey--I've only
treated a couple of foals with it in recent years so can't vouch for its
price of late. But I suspect it is cheaper than GastroGuard. Cimetidine in
the generic form is pretty affordable.
